CHEMICAL GAB, LAB SESSIONS
Business Day, September 23, 1976, p. 15

The Philippine Institute of Pure and Applied Chemistry (PIPAC) and the chemistry department of Ateneo de Manila are sponsoring three workshops on the use of modern methods of chemical analysis.

The first workshop will be on "Infrared Spectrophotometry" and will run from Sept. 27 to Oct. 18.

The second will be on "Gas Chromatography" (Nov. 15 to Dec. 6) and the third on "Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry," (Jan. 17 to Feb. 7).

The workshops are sponsored by PIPAC as part of its objective to serve industry and agriculture through chemical research, analytical services and technical training.

Each of the instrumentation workshops will consist of 10 one and a half hour lectures and three laboratory sessions of four hours each.

The lectures on each of the topics will cover basic theory, applications and limitations of the method, sampling techniques, the instrument and its parts, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.

The laboratory sessions stress individual use of the instruments by the participants and are designed to give the participants a practical understanding and basic skill in the use of each of the methods of analysis. Insturments to be used in the training include both basic and sophisticated research-type models.

For infrered spectroscopy: Perkin-Elmer 337 (research grade), Perkin-Elmer 710 and 700 (basic); for gas chromatography: Hewlett Packard 5711A and Perkin-Elmer 800 (both research grade), Gow-Mac 69-100 and 750 (both basic instruments); for atomic absorption: Varian AA-6 (research grade), Unicam SP-90.

Lecturers are: Dr. Ana M. Javellana, Dr. Amando F. Kapauan, Fr. William J. Schmitt, S.J., Dr.Modesto T. Chua, Salvador Balalta, Fr. Antonio Samson, S.J. and Cristina Aquino.

All lectures will be in the evening of Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 until 7:30 and the laboratory sessions are on Saturdays.
