Approximately US $3.8 M (1 billion yen) has been donated by Japan to the Philippine government for the expansion of the Philippine Institute of Pure and Applied Chemistry (PIPAC).
The notes on the grant were signed and exchanged by Acting Foreign Minister Pacifico A. Castro and Ambassador Hideho Tanaka at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday.
A three-storey building furnished with equipment for chemical analysis will be constructed within the Ateneo de Manila University compound in order to enhance the capacity of PIPAC, which is a non-profit entity engaged in providing chemical services such as chemical analysis, chemistry-related technical training, chemistry-related consulting, research and development services.
This project is expected to be highly beneficial to the growing chemical and agricultural industries of the Philippines especially to the small and medium size companies which are not capable of chemical analysis on their own.
